Brusly High School made the most of McKinley's special teams blunders to put points up in a hurry and run away with a win.

Mishandled punts by McKinley in the first half led to Brusly drives that started at the McKinley 27-, 12- and 4-yard lines. The short drives led to quick touchdowns in a 39-0 win.

With the win, Brusly (7-1, 5-1) stayed in the District 6-4A hunt. Quarterback Drake Vincent finished 11 of 22 passing for 183 yards. He threw three touchdown passes and had one interception.

"Special teams, we take a lot of pride in it," Brusly coach Hoff Schooler said. "It changes the game pretty quickly. We treat it like another defensive down."

McKinley (2-6, 1-5) amassed just 73 total yards. The Panthers averaged 2.2 yards per play.

"We did a good job tackling," Schooler said. "The guys tonight were locked in on tackling the football. We ask a lot of them, and they were locked in tonight."

Brusly forced a punt around midfield on McKinley's first drive. The Panthers began at their own 23 and began to move the ball after Vincent completed passes of nine and 13 yards to get near midfield.

Running back Robdrick Covington later ripped off a 37-yard run to set Brusly up in the red zone. Vincent found Reggie Riley on a screen pass for a 13-yard touchdown to go up 7-0 with 5:54 left in the game.

The Panthers forced a three and out and then blocked the punt to get the ball at the McKinley 27. Covington ripped off an 8-yard run, then scored on a 22-yard run to make it 15-0 late in the first quarter.

Another mishandled McKinley punt gave Brusly possession at the McKinley 12. The Panthers scored in one play after Vincent found Riley on another screen pass, this one for 12 yards to make it 22-0 with 9:47 left in the first half.

Alfredo Jurado added a 34-yard field goal to make it 25-0. Another McKinley punt ended in disaster after the kick went low and hit their own player's back and landed inside the McKinley 5.

Covington scored one play later to make it 32-0 at halftime.

McKinley opened the third with a Braylen Thomas interception after the ball got tipped by his teammate. Brusly defensive back Ryland Johnson got the ball back for his side with an interception three plays later.

With a running clock, Brusly then ran an 11-play, 80-yard drive that took up nearly 12 minutes. The drive ended with Vincent finding Patrick Gales on a slant for a 6-yard touchdown to make it 39-0.

"I like to say they're easy to throw to," Vincent said about his receivers. "I have a lot of skill out there. They're just really good players."
