Brusly's Maci Williams had a three-shot lead entering Tuesday, just 18 holes away from winning another state title.
She could've felt the nerves of a final round or the pressure of repeating as a state champion, but the battle-tested sophomore treated the day just like any other round.
Williams ate at her usual pre-round breakfast spot of choice, McDonald's, went through her warm-up routine and shot a 73 to win her second straight Division I individual state title at the Le Triomphe golf course in Lafayette.
Williams shot a 71 in round 1, finishing 2-under. She shot even par in round 2 to finish with a total score of 144 strokes. She won the tournament by three strokes over Evelynn Artieta of Walker, who had a score of 147.
"I was on my toes the whole round," Williams said. "The hard work paying off means a lot. To go back to back might mean even more."
Williams finished with nine birdies and seven bogeys across the two rounds. She started her first round with three birdies in her first seven holes.
In her second round, she had four bogeys and one birdie through 11 holes to move her total score to one over. Williams settled in and made birdies on the 12th and 13th holes to move back to 1-under. She birdied her final hole to finish the job.
She credited her ability to drive the ball off the tee as a key factor to her success.
"That was definitely my helping hand," she said. "The driver took over for me."
Williams struggled with her putting at times this season, and she relied on her driver to get the job done. She tinkered with her putter throughout the year, and a switch in the bag proved pivotal to a win Tuesday.
She swapped out her Odyssey AI for a Scotty Cameron the day after the metro tournament on April 21.
"I putted terribly," she said on her rationale behind the change. "It really can't get much worse."
Williams said she shot better at regionals, and after swapping the grip, she sank enough putts to seal a championship.
She stuck to playing her brand of golf without checking the leaderboard throughout the final round. On the 18th hole, she stuck her approach shot within 6 feet of the hole. Without even having to glance at the scoreboard, Williams knew a title was in her sights.
"I knew I put in the time in," she said. "It was more like I was ready more than I had expectations."
She was also excited for her entire Brusly team, which qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history. The Panthers finished sixth with a score of 348.
"To see my team succeed," she said. "That was cool."
